Foster Parent WeekWeechi-it-te-win recognizes the importance of our caregivers; they are in fact essential to our overall vision. Weechi-it-te-win acknowledges each and every day our gratitude for your work with our children and we along with Ontario and Canada honor you on this special week October 21 -27. Alternative Care Alternative Care is provided primarily by a child’s extended family members. When extended family members are not available, WFS recruits other Native families (Care Families) preferably in the child’s community, who want to open their hearts and homes to Native children. Caregivers are individuals who believe that children are sacred gifts from the Creator. They open their hearts and homes to children whose biological parents or guardians are not able for a period of time to meet the child’s holistic needs. Caregivers give freely of their time, energy and love. Caregivers provide more than food, clothing and shelter; they invest in the child emotionally and integrates the child into all aspects of the Care Family’s life. Each community care program within the 10 First Nation communities, designs strategies to support and honor our caregivers. Caregiver gatherings are one mechanism to show appreciation.
