Director of Naaniigaan Abinoojii
Kathy Kishiqueb, HBSW
Kathy Kishiqueb is a proud member of the Ojibways of Onigaming First Nation, and is influential in the development of Weechi-it-te-win Family Services. Kathy is one of the original members of the planning committee which worked towards the mandating of Weechi-it-te-win Family Services in 1986. Kathy was instrumental in the development of the community care program services and objectives, as well as in the planning of the services of Weechi-it-te-win Family Services.
Kathy is a member of the Kingfisher clan.
Kathy has been employed with the agency for 15 years in various service capacities ranging from the Alternative Care Coordinator, Resource Manager, where she presently holds the responsibilities of our Director of Naaniigaan Abinoojii.
Kathy’s current capacity as the Director of Naaniigaan Abinoojii is supported through her strong beliefs in the culture of the Anishinaabe people anf the family teachings of her grandmother and mother. She is a fluent Ojibwemowin speaker and strong advocate for the promotion of language development in addition to promoting the cultural teaching of the Anishinaabe people into service delivery models. Furthermore Kathy actively utilizes traditional Anishinaabe family structures in promoting and preserving traditional teachings for families and their futures.
What does a Director of Naaniigaan Abinoojii Do?
The Director of Naaniigaan Abinoojii is a full-time, permanent, professional and administrative position. The Director of Naaniigaan Abinoojii works within a culturally competent system of care and acknowledges and incorporates, at all levels, the importance of culture, the expansion of cultural knowledge, and the overall vision of Weechi-It-Te-Win Family Services.
The Director of Naaniigaan Abinoojii promotes cultural awareness through active participation and implementation of bicultural services, gaining understanding of historical trauma and impacts of oppression and how these relate to current issues related to Native child welfare services, as well as recognizing past successes and achievements made by communities towards self-governance. The Director of Naaniigaan Abinoojii develops culturally competent practice skills that are congruent to the self-identitified needs of the ten First Nations and to Weechi-It-Te-Win Family Services, with a primary emphasis being on local customs, values, teachings and traditions.
